UAW Region 1A to Distribute Sleeping Bags to the Homeless on MLK Day
DETROIT — UAW Region 1A members will hit the streets of Detroit on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 16, to deliver 300 sleeping bags to homeless people to help them brave the bitter Michigan winter.
Region 1A Director Rory Gamble and members of the region, which covers the Downriver area and part of the City of Detroit, donated funds for more than 200 of the sleeping bags, which are given to homeless people who will not go to area shelters. The bags are designed to handle temperatures down to 17 degrees below zero.
On Dec. 9, Gamble co-hosted on “Queen of Talk” Mildred Gaddis’ radio-thon and helped raise more than $13,000 for various community projects, including the sleeping bags. On the show, Gamble once again challenged other labor, community and business organizations to join the cause and he said he was amazed by the response.
“The generosity of our community toward people in need never ceases to amaze me,” Gamble said. “When there’s a need, people from all walks of life in the metropolitan Detroit area step up.”
The region is recruiting volunteers to help keep Detroit’s homeless warm. Volunteers should meet at the UAW Vote Center, 15140 Livernois Ave., Detroit, at noon to pick up bags. Volunteers are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather. Hot chocolate and coffee will be provided at the Vote Center.
